I can't see your last attachment. But I wonder why you're using tile? Why not trim out the window the same way you would any other window?

Not sure I would do an opening there as don't think it would be real conducive to communication between the two rooms . . . but if do put the opening, also wondering why you wouldn't trim out like a window. While the tile is pretty, doesn't seem to really go with the look you are trying to create.

There was some concern that we needed the area immediately behind the cooktop to be more fire resistant than standard beadboard.

If it does need to be tile, I've also thought about doing some white subways as filler between the opening and the textural tile frame to bring the framework out to the width of the cooktop.

Here's a possible:
Run the window up to the fan and down to a tile's width above the stove.
Wrap the beadboard around the sides of the opening.
Run the tile across the stove, then wrap it around the bottom of the window.

I like the continuity of the breadboard here.

You could also run it along the sides and wrap it around the inside of the sides as well as the bottom.

I'm sorry, but I think it would look really strange to have a little opening there over the stove. If this is your forever house, go ahead and ignore me, but I think potential buyers would find that very off-putting.

OK, I think we're going to let this idea go by the wayside. I soo wanted to open up the wall between the kitchen and family room. This was my last ditch effort at doing so.

But, the opening is just too skinny to pull it off nicely. I can really see that in Bell's rendition. Thank you all for weighing in on this!

I was going to suggest widening it so that it might be more conducive for communication but then I got to thinking. A dangerous thing, I know. It seems like most times you are at the cooktop, you'll have the fan on, right? Which would pretty much eliminate good communication through there anyway. So I think it''s a good call to eliminate it.

Thanks, Funkycamper. I would have loved to have made the opening wider, but there's a heat run in the way on the right hand side. Silly me, I didn't think about the fan noise getting in the way of conversation. Good reminder! (One of those "duh!" moments, for sure.)
