curved countertop: what to choose?

We're remodeling our galley style kitchen by opening up the full wall between the kitchen and dining room and replacing it with a half wall. We are pushing one end of the half wall about 2 feet into the dining room area. The other end of the half wall needs to stay where it is to allow for enough room for passing into the family room. Because of this the half wall will be curved--which means that the bar in the dining room will be curved as will the kitchen counter on the other side of the half wall. We are now trying to pick out countertops. We are considering laminate, but are concerned that the straight edge will be stark. Does anyone have curved laminate countertops? How do you like them? We have also been informed that no matter what surface we decide to go with, these curves are going to add expense. This has us wondering if we shouldn't just spring for granite or silestone.
