I love the idea. Slate can have a range of hardness, luster, and durability, so the key is to get a look at the specific piece you are after and do the usual tests for scratching, staining, and etching.

This is one of those things that sounds neat, but isn't very practical unless you've got major skills and expensive tools.

I've recycled stone designed as counter tops and it's barely cost effective. This stuff won't even have an edge on it or a sink cutout. And who's going to huff it off the truck?
