I am not familiar with the pull down but that sure sounds like a defect. Have you contacted Kohler?

Is the weight properly installed on the hose? Fiddling with that can make a big difference.

Maybe the weight that slides on the hose isn't heavy enough? I can't see how to add to the weight now that it's been installed. Any ideas?

First try moving the weight a couple inches further up the hose towards the faucet.

Almost all faucets rotate 360 to allow the handle placement to be customized in the field. It seemed odd at first on my small prep sink, now I don't even notice. I don't think it will bother you once you get used to it.

Can you take a picture of the "works" in your sink cab. Maybe the hose is getting hung up on something else and the weight can't work effectively. If the hose isn't getting caught on anything, you could just add another weight. You just need a wrench to disconnect than reconnect your faucet. Alternatively, if you don't want to monkey with the plumbing, you could attach a chain type bike lock(heavy, but not too heavy & easy to wrap and remove for non-DIYers) on the hose.

The weight shouldn't slide at all, I think. It should screw on tightly and stay put.

Which Kohler faucet is it? We have the full-size Vinnata (690) and have had no problems at all with it. Do check the weight. There are probably instructions that came with your faucet telling you how to adjust the weight.
