HELP! Disappointed with Painted Cabinets

We recently remodeled our kitchen with painted cabinets. The doors we wanted did not come standard with paint. I was told that it would be a special order and that it would cost more and take a bit longer. (They do offer other cabinets in paint) When the cabinets arrived I noticed that all they did was paint the color we wanted right over the cherry stained cabinets.
I am disappointed because the paint seems to chip too easily, not to mention the fact that when it does chip you see very dark wood as opposed to a natural wood. I also thought that over time it would distress nicely, but this won't look good now.
So I have a few questions
1. Is it normal for a reputable manufacturer to paint over a stained cabinet?
2. Should you paint over a brand new, stained cabinet?
3. Will these cabinets chip and/or peel more easily?

Would I be wrong to ask the manufacturer to replace the doors at the price we originally agreed upon?
