need to update my 1996 kitchen

HI there - my kitchen needs a little facelift to modernize it before I sell it next year. my original thought was replacing the countertops which are light laminate and look cheesey. The original owners did a nice upgrade with the ceramic floors but as the appraiser said to me today, the counters need an update. after reading here I saw a lot of stained and painted oak cabinets too. trying to figure out if i should just do the counters (not sure what material though)or should i do something with those cabinets too? I was thinking that the granite might make the cabinets look worse? thanks for any thoughts. trying to include a picture of kitchen as it is.

You might want to post on the discussions side of this forum. "Gallery" and "conversation" get very little traffic. If you repost you might want to include a close up photo.
