vacations and staying in touch

An interesting subject (at least to me it's interesting) was touched on in josie's kitchen post. Tell me what you think about the following, particularly as it applies to being an employee in an out of the home job:

The best employees are dispensible and should never check in to work while on vacation.

I'm just curious what others think. In your comment, could you mention the year you entered the workforce, too. Thanks everyone.

RE: vacations and staying in touch

I'd rephrase to:

"The best employees make detailed provisions for their projects so their colleagues can carry on seamlessly without them while they are on vacation. If the unexpected does happen, they make themselves available; but because they have fully trained their assistants and briefed their associates, any necessary interruptions can be handled quickly and easily."

(I entered the workforce in 1983.)
