What I did on my winter vacation

We just returned from a ten-day trip to Puerto Rico. The weather was perfect--sunny and in the 80s during the day and cool at night. We did the usual tourist things: hiking in the rainforest, visiting the beaches, observing the Observatory, relaxing by the pool, walking around Old San Juan, kayaking to the biobay, and snorkeling.

We stayed at a small cottage called La Casita, which is part of Villa Sevilla (four different houses you can stay in). It was in a good location to explore both the San Juan area and the east side of the island. If we ever go back to Puerto Rico, we will most likely stay at Villa Sevilla again.

Overall it was a great trip. We had a quiet and comfortable place to stay, met friendly people, got an inexpensive rental car, ate some local food, won money in the casino, saw lots of flora and fauna, got lost only twice, and had uneventful flights (for free too!).

Wow - that sure sounds nice right about now - when the high today was 1 degree above zero. I don't really have any winter vacation plans - though I did take last Friday off and went to Ely, MN where it was minus 30 degrees.....

Those are so cool! Love the teeny tiny hermit crab...wish I could see the fiddlers waving...and YUCK what is that huge termite thing--ugh...but still, the beauty is in so much diversity, so different from out here. Like for instance, never thought I'd see a land snail shell I thought was beautiful :)

That hermit crab was so tiny DH had to put his finger in the photo for scale. We wouldn't have even seen it if it hadn't moved. I can email you a video of the fiddler crabs waving if you like. I haven't been able to view it myself, as I think it requires Quicktime (which I don't want to download onto the computer I'm currently using).

I'm just assuming that the huge pod is from termites. We didn't see any live critters near any of them, but there were mud tunnels going from the ground to the pods. I did a little research online, but didn't find out for certain what they are.

I still wish I'd had a chance to photograph the beautiful conch that DH found while snorkeling. The colors on the inside of it were amazing. But we didn't have an underwater camera with us.

We do tend to photograph the oddest things on our vacations! I have one from Puerto Vallarta of a telephone pole and a crow. ? I think margaritas may have "inspired" that particular photo. :)
