Do 97% modulating need annual tune-ups?

Does the York, Luxaire, Coleman, Nutone 97% modulating VS need annual tune-ups? (The same unit I hear-?)

I don’t have AC, but I’m considering it. What about with AC?

My neighbor got Lennox 60C-110 2 stage, variable, 94.5% AFUE. He "needs" to have both a heater visit and an AC tune-up visit each year. This sounds expensive. I question the need. What do you guys think.

I’m considering a quote for a Trane XC90 90% 2 stage variable, if I can avoid annual tune-ups (2x if I go with AC). (I’ve already used my $1500. tax credit with new $5K + of new windows.)

I’m awaiting a response from two contractors, but thought to ask your opinions.

Thanks.

Oto

I think a single servicing is adequate and should protect the manufacturer's regular service warranty. I do mine in the late summer/early fall. Heat pump and 90% gas furnace. You could also do it in the spring/early summer.

I personally think twice a year is overkill and probably a sales job for an additional service call. Unless the manufacturer's warranty specifically requires it, I would do annual service only.

When my customers ask me how much a tune up service call cost, i tell them it is free. If you don't have your equipment checked and tuned to get your eff. back where it should be then the extra fuel it will use this winter will be more than what the service would have been, so the service pays for itself. paulbm
