TSTAT for Heat Pump W/ Aux Heat

Hi, I have a Trane XE 1000 with a trane air handler TWE048C140B3. I replaced the original weathertron tstat with a Ritetemp. It works fine, but in cold weather it runs for hours struggling and not calling for the aux heat like the original did. I have to manually bump it up 2 degrees to come on and then it reaches the temp and cycles off. Will a Honeywell RTH 3100C that is made for a heat pump w/ aux heat work better? When I replaced the original, a wire was left over and the instructions said to just cap it off. I think it was red but not sure but I recall it having to do with the aux heat. Anyway, the honeywell at least has a function to adjust the aux cycle rate for gas, steam, etc and electric which mine is. How and when would this tstat call for aux heat and is there a better one that can be adjusted for aux heat? Thanks
