Please help me with Trane heat pumps

Hi all,
I have 2 heat pump systems (one for downstairs, the other upstairs) in my home. Both of them are over 10 years old and need replacement soon. I plan to replace the upstairs system very soon because it seems to be on its last leg. I have received several quotes from a Trane dealer. Can you please tell me which one is the best opinion in terms of price and comfort?

1) 4twb3024(XB13) + tam7a0a24
EER:12, SEER: 14, SPF: 8.5
$5320

2) 4twb4024(XB14) + tam7a0a24
EER:12.5, SEER: 15, SPF: 8.8
$6200

3) XR15 (2 ton) + TAM7 (2 ton)
$6530

4) XB14 (2 ton) + GAF2 (2 ton)
$5500

The second floor is about 900 sq ft. I heard good things about the TAM7 variable speed unit. The dealer is also offering 10 year labor warranty on top of the 10 year parts warranty. Do the quotes looks reasonable to you? Thank you.

All of the ones with the TAM7 (variable speed) will be the best (especially in a humid climate) and equivalent in comfort. #3 is the best, but #1 is the best value. #2 is a slight boost in efficiency from #1, otherwise the same. #3 (XR15) is a better built outdoor unit than #1 and #2 (XB13 and XB14 respectively). I would not even consider #4, would far prefer #1.

What is your location? That might help decide which efficiency level is worth the price. If you decide that a higher efficiency unit wouldn't be worth it to you, you might want to consider the XR13 as a nice compromise. Better built than the XB series, but less expensive than the XR13.

Have you gotten quotes from any other contractors?

I would stay away from the XB series of HP condensers.

In fact, I would get a quote on the XR13 HP condenser with TAM7 VS air handler. Very good numbers with lots of bang for the buck.

    6059613 Active Systems TRANE XR13 TRANE 4TWR3024D1 *AM7A0B30H21 770 25600 12.00 14.50 23000 9.00 15000 1 HRCU-A-CB 219 552

Thank you hvtech42. I live close to Atlanta Georgia. There are three Trane dealers here. I will get a quote from them for XR 13 and TAM7 next week.

Thank you tigerdunes. Can you tell me why there is a need to have *AM7A0B30H21 (2.5 ton?) for a 2 ton XR 13? Is it better than a 2 ton TAM 7 considering the extra cost and value?

It is quite typical to get your better performance/efficiency numbers with the larger coil air handler. Nothing to be concerned with. Cost difference if that's your major concern should be inconsequential. Go to AHRI Directory and take a look.

It should be noted that same system I suggested is available from sister company American Standard. Usually a bit less expensive than Trane. Same quality.

    6079047 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD GOLD SI AMERICAN STANDARD 4A6H3024D1 *AM7A0B30H21 770 25600 12.00 14.50 23000 9.00 15000 1 HRCU-A-CB 219 552

I think it's interesting to compare the numbers with the XR15 numbers. See below.

    5020725 Active Systems TRANE XR15 WEATHERTRON TRANE 4TWR5024G1 *AM7A0B30H21 835 24000 12.50 15.00 22600 9.00 13400 1 HRCU-A-CB Yes 198 552 Yes

Easy decision as far as Trane and AmStd.

    IMO
