running ac ducts on top of roof

I have a flat roofed home. The air handlers are in the house. The ac units are outside. I have newer high efficiency units. I have underground return. To accomodate for the ducts, the ceiling is dropped in areas. I had a contractor look at doing other things and he mentioned that I could run some of the ducts on top of the roof to open the ceiling up more (I had asked him about raising the ceiling, which he discouraged). He said we could insultate the ducts. I live in AZ where it gets very hot. Is this a bad idea?
