Venting for High Efficiency Furnace

pataya

The intake and exhaust vents for our furnace were installed too close together. I understand they're supposed to be a minimum of 12" apart but we've got only 8.5". This can affect the furnace efficiency if the oxygen-poor exhaust gets drawn into the intake. Also last winter the warm moist exhaust air actually froze over the intake pipe, effectively causing the furnace to shut down. To fix this I'd like to add an extra length of ABS to the exhaust elbow. Ideally i'd like to add another elbow to route the exhaust up and then another elbow to take it further away horizontally. But I'm afraid this may be a bad idea as the moisture might freeze at the elbows. Does anyone have any insight into this?
