Is this a reasonable price for a Rheem?

soccerguy985

$7000
Rheem Prestige
2.5 Ton
15.5 SEER
9.0 HSPF
10kw backup heater
RPQL-030EZ
And air handler RHKL HM3617JA
It is an attic installation for the air handler
Reusing Honeywell Wifi Thermostat that was just installed

Is it just me or does this seem high?

I got a Rheem Prestie 3.5 ton unit that was a 80 efficiency gas furnance with heat pump (dual fuel) same seer and hspf for 7k earlier this year. I guess I was thinking this should be more in the 5000-5500 range?

    Same dealer?

    for a 2 1/2 ton, yes, I would say it's high.

    6 K would be reasonable.

Shop around. FYI, Sister company Ruud has exact same system.

Different dealer, he used to work for the first dealer, came highly recommended. (First dealer is now going through some changes, didn't come on time for quote, didn't call me until an hr after his 2 hr window, left me with a bad taste in my mouth)

I was wondering as a follow up, if you have any opinions on an American Standard Heat Pump? This dealer did not like Rheem or Rudd said they were "junk". Although my current Rheem seems to have no problems *knock on wood*

Gave me a quote on an American Standard 2.5 Ton
    15 Seer
    HSPF 9

    Model Number 4A6H5030G1000A
    and Air Handler TAM7AOB30H215C

    $5700
    10KW Auxillary Heat staged
    Reuse existing Thermostat

Depending on model, AmStd is superior to Rheem.

Sometimes there are unexplained nuances in a brand's system configurations. This is one of those times.

Here is the AS Heritage 13 system that I would recommend.

    5271458 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD AMERICAN STANDARD 13 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H3030C1 *AM7A0B30H21 965 31400 12.50 15.00 29000 9.00 16500 1 HRCU-A-CB 260 662 Yes

    5271459 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD AMERICAN STANDARD 13 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H3030C1 *AM7A0C36H31 1025 32200 13.00 15.50 29000 9.00 16500 1 HRCU-A-CB 258 662 Yes

Now look at the AS Heritage 15 system configurations. If you look close there is very little difference of any consequence as far as performance/efficiency numbers.

    5021984 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD HERITAGE 15 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H5030G1 *AM7A0B30H21 950 31600 12.50 15.00 30000 9.00 18900 1 HRCU-A-CB Yes 261 662 Yes

    5198252 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD HERITAGE 15 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H5030G1 *AM7A0C36H31 1050 32200 13.00 16.00 30000 9.00 18700 1 HRCU-A-CB 250 662

All of these systems would be excellent. I would go with either of the Heritage 13 systems if I could save a buck.

If you need help with interpretation, let me know.

    IMO

BTW, you realize AmStd is Trane's sister company.

The Heritage 13 and Heritage 15 series AS heat pumps are basically identical to Trane's XR13 and XR15 Heat pumps. All excellent single stage heat pumps.

What is the difference between the system I was quoted and these two, and what should be the difference in price?

    5271458 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD AMERICAN STANDARD 13 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H3030C1 *AM7A0B30H21 965 31400 12.50 15.00 29000 9.00 16500 1 HRCU-A-CB 260 662 Yes

I'd be careful of anyone who says "Rheem is junk". Yes, 7k for a single stage straight heatpump system is too high if the market for a similar dual fuel system is the same price.

I agree with above post but I firmly believe AmStd heat pumps depending on model are superior and a better value than Rheem.

Do you believe $5700-$6000 for either of the two AMSTD systems that Tigerdunes recommended would be reasonable?

  • tigerdunes

This appears to be matching number for their Rheem system you listed in OP.

    3393230 Active Systems RHEEM RHEEM RPQL SERIES RHEEM SALES COMPANY, INC. RPQL-030JEZ RHKL-HM3617+RCSL-H*3617 1025 30000 12.50 15.00 28200 9.00 17600 1 HRCU-A-CB 248 662 Yes

And here are the two AmStd Heritage 13 configurations.

    5271458 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD AMERICAN STANDARD 13 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H3030C1 *AM7A0B30H21 965 31400 12.50 15.00 29000 9.00 16500 1 HRCU-A-CB 260 662 Yes

    5271459 Active Systems AMERICAN STANDARD AMERICAN STANDARD 13 AMERICAN STANDARD, INC. 4A6H3030C1 *AM7A0C36H31 1025 32200 13.00 15.50 29000 9.00 16500 1 HRCU-A-CB 258 662 Yes

The difference are really inconsequential between Rheem and the two AS systems with major exception of pricing. With the AmStd configurations, you will note you get slightly better performance/efficiency numbers with the larger air handler coil-the 36.

And you do get more heating BTUs at 17 degrees with the AmStd Heritage 15 model you were originally quoted.

The brand decision is a no brainer. Your question is really about the whether to go with AS 13 or AS 15 along with which air handler. If the AmStd dealer wants your business the 13 model should be less expensive than the 15 model. Air handler whether the 30 or 36 should be the same or inconsequential.

A couple of things. Existing lineset to be flushed and reused? Size is correct to AS specs? Since attic install, pan to be furnished with necessary shutoff?

If you have confidence in the AmStd dealer, then go ahead with purchase.

Remember there are three parts for a successful new system.Good equipment and yes it does matter, a good ductwork system, and finally the install itself.

    IMO

Paid around $7800 in September 2014 for a replacement 3 ton, 16 seer, American Standard heat pump with ground level outside condenser unit. The attic heat exchanger is variable speed . . starts slow and steps up air flow circulation.

Thanks all for the follow up. Had a Trane dealer come out, and said that the American Standard Airhandler, the TAM wouldn't fit through the opening and they would need to take the trim off in order to do so. He recommended a 2.5 TON 4TWR5030 with an AF2AOA36 Air Handler for $5270 (had an $800 trane rebate)

I am leaning more towards the trane, because if I can get a comparable Trane at an AMSTD price then that seems like a pretty good deal IMHO

  • tigerdunes

I will have to study this a little bit.

    What is your opening measurements?

How much to remove trim and replace?

You take a real hit on performance/efficiency numbers with the GAF model air handler.

    Pst back.

Opening is 20 inches, could probably take off the trim and put it back for the same price.

What is the difference in performance? The guy said the 17inch was designed for the attic space...

I have given you the measurements of both TAM7 and GAF2 air handlers. These determine the performance/efficiency numbers.

I have also given you the comparison between both the AmStd Heritage 13 and Heritage 15 Heat Pumps, basically same as Trane's XR13 and XR15 HPs.

If the trim can be removed and put back, I would definitely use the TAM7 var speed air handlers. Depending on installed price, you can make an informed decision on the HP condenser whether Trane or AmStd, whether Heritage 13 or 15 or Trane model.

Lots of firepower, great system, great pricing.

    Now for the great install.

How do you filter return air? What size return(s)?

Individual filters in each of the returns. Returns are properly sized...don't have my paperwork with me right now, but they ran the calculations with some software. My home was built in 95 with individual returns in each bedroom upstairs, plus one in the hallway. Thanks for your help. Really appreciate it. Came a long way from a 7k rheem lol

You're getting an amazing price on a great system. I also live in No Va and get mailers advertising your exact system for $6495 for a 2.5 ton and they charge another $400 for attics. Their price for the 3 ton version that I have my eye on is $6995 + $400. Could you PM me with the name of your contractor. Thank you.

    For soccer

You will have pan with shutoff feature for attic installation?
