| We are going to build a new house here in southern Indiana (near Louisville, KY), and natural gas is not available. I don't think geothermal is an option because the bedrock is so near the surface. We do plan to have propane for the kitchen stove. My only experience has been with natural gas, so I am at a loss on heat source for the new house, or how to begin researching it. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated. |

| Ground source heat pumps don't need to have vertical wells. If you have enough property you can have loops relatively close to the surface. Find a local, certified installer and talk. Your choices are heat pump, propane and fuel oil. |

| If you can't do geothermal, spend some good money on the shell/insulation and just use a heat pump and electric resistance. In most areas of the country (and I am pretty sure Indiana) electricity is cheaper than anything else (except NG and coal and do you really want to deal with coal?) |
