Portable ac/heater/dehumidifier

Anyone have experience with a portable ac/heater.A friend is looking at an edge star unit. I dont understand the term portable as they are vented through the wall or ceiling/roof.

The unit she spotted handles up to 400 s.f. She wants to turn a garage into a living space w/o too much intrusion on the exterior garage wall as it is a focal point of the house and is the only wall available for venting. No go through the roof and she doesn't want to go to the mess and expense of tying into the existing as it would be quite involved and might not be set up to handle it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

yes i put in a portable air/dehumidifier last year and it works great. i bought a $500 10k btu one from home depot. i actually paid $399 for it because they ran out of a $399 one. it works great. you have to run the drip hose and exhaust hose threw a wall to the outside. i ran it threw my soffit coming of the attic.it also comes with a nice window unit kit to run botht hrew a window i one's close. cools great

The portable units with discharge hose are extreamly inefficient in use. For temporary cooling in a room that only needs to be cooled once in while, they are an easy solution but for continuous use, they will cost you far more in electricity than a proper cooling system.

Perhaps you frind should consider installing a mini split with the condeser unit on the far side of the house.

Thanks for the responses. It would be continous use in the summer for cooling as we are in the mojave desert, but primarily only when they have guests. The problem is that the second story bedrooms are above the garage, so routing the lines to a condensor would be involved.I guess if only to be used when guests are using the space, it wouldn't be too bad w/ the portable. She also wants to use the area for arts and crafts type projects when not in use as a guest bedroom. Thanks again!

I too, am waiting to convert my garage into a craft/computer/plant room. My central heat & air unit is not big enough to handle the extra. I am also interested in the most economical solution. Thanks
