Help starting quote process for furnace & AC

Posted by kathy77 (My Page) on

I have to get both a furnace and AC. Existing furnace was here when I bought the house in 1977. No existing AC. When they come to give me estimates, what questions should I ask? Also, I'm a Costco member and they have a furnace replacement program, should I get an estimate from them too or avoid that type of deal?
If it makes any difference, I have a 980sq ft ranch with an unfinished basement.

Oh, and is it worth it to join Angie's List for this?
Thanks :)

Kathy

What is your location?

What size is existing furnace? Your fuel is nat gas?

I would never recommend purchasing HVAC from a big box store like Costco.

I see nothing wrong about checking HVAC dealers on Angies list. Also check BBB, yrs in operation, and neighbors and people at work.

I'm in the Detroit metro area. Natural gas, no clue what size the furnace is. Where and what do I look for to find size?
Thanks

Should be a data plate on the outside of the furnace or perhaps inside the control door.

It's a Luxaire, 137500 btu, 7 amps, 120 volts

I would like to be somewhat prepared before I call anyone in for an estimate. Want to know what I should be asking them about the system. Well, besides, you know, how long in business, references, that sort of thing.

I suggest asking friends and neighbors who they use that they like.

When calling for an appointment, state that you don't have AC now, and the age of your home, and say that you want their most experienced person to come out to look at your house, and that you are not in a hurry and will wait to have that person come.

Here are some questions to ask:

How do you determine the size of the furnace and AC condenser?
How do you determine if my duct work is adequately sized?
What do recommend for a media filter and why?
Do you offer a 10 year parts and labor warranty from the manufacturer?
Can you quote me a few variations of system (good, better, best) and explain the advantages of each?
Are you technicians NATE certified?
