Replacement Thermostat for Lennox Heat Pump

My 13 year old (SEER about 10) Lennox heat pump has the original Honeywell thermostat. When the service man was in for our routine winter servicing, he suggested that we upgrade to the latest top of the line electronic controller which has a set back feature and touch pads with visual digital settings. It costs about $300 installed. I have seen many electronic set-back controllers in hardware store adds locally. They cost about $50-$60. Is there any reason that one of those won't work?
Thanks.

There are many stats that will fit that description at competitive prices. Get the make/model number. V

Usually the hardware store stats are pretty cheaply built. Key would be asking the dealer what he was proposing. Plus I would guess his includes installation and warranty. While a new stat isn't that hard, DIY stat installs, especially on heat pumps with more wires and sometimes confusing color codes are a great source of revenue for us.

Very few programmable t.stats will work w/ heat pumps.
