repair or replace?

I came home yesterday and our a/c was out. The condenser fan was not running and I did some basic checks (but forgot to check the breaker) before calling for service. The service tech found an open circuit and high resistance on the 5 year old Amana compressor that was tripping the breaker. They are going to see if the compressor is covered under warranty but said labor is going to run me $800 plus parts and R22 needed (2.5 lbs?). If the compressor is not under warranty, should I consider replacing a 5 year old unit for a r410 unit? The current unit is a ASC13 2.5 ton unit....I'm not thrilled about sinking over a grand into a low SEER R22 unit especially if R22 prices are going to keep going up.
