Carrier outdoor sensor error

Today my thermostat started flashing E3 which is an outdoor air sensor error.
Can someone tell me what it is and can I replace it. What does it look like?
I checked the wires to the thermostat but have as yet opened the main panel on the compressor. The unit is 12 years old. Two years ago I had a reversing valve replaced in the condenser unit and the unit was checked.

I have charged units before and installed a split system myself.
