central air question

My central air which is about 8 years old with very few hours on it, decided to quit
we were having a thunderstorm and the hydro flicked off and on a couple of times
and now it seems the compressor doesnt want to start,
I do believe it attampts to start, but of course I cant here for the cooling fan running to tell if it is attampting to start??
any ideas what I can try?
