Weil McLain GV-3 Discontinued

Posted by sayde (My Page) on

I learned of this model on this forum and was happy to find a boiler that is cast iron and 87% efficient. The sales person from the company we went to had pitched either the aluminum WeilMclain Ultra or a much less efficient cast iron model. When I asked about the GV-3 he said Weil Mclain was discontinuing it.

Is this true?

No it has not been discontinued

However most stocking distributor/wholesalers have stopped carrying and stocking this model due to its unpopularity. The GV touts an 87% efficiency and it requires Cat III venting which gets quite expensive if going over 8-10’ in length. Besides this it has an internal circulator that wastes a tremendous amount of capacity recirculating through a thermostatic valve to prevent condensing in a cast iron product. Because of this typically on a good install the piping should be primary/secondary which forces the installer to put in as a minimum one more circulator.

If you look at their product line, it falls between an 84% (CG) and a 93% (Ultra).
For a few points of efficiency, it is not cost effective to install the GV with the venting costs and higher price of unit. This combined with a HSI ignition system; the potential for other problems has always plagued this boiler.

If it was me, I would not put this boiler in. This model which was at the top of the efficiency class, dates back to about 1987. Many better boilers have been introduced since then.

As long as we are on boilers and the aluminum block Ultra has been mentioned, I wouldn’t install one of these either. The Ultra has been troubled in the past with the US higher temps that we design around. Besides the block have issues with unbalanced water, eroding the waterways and burning a hole in the condensate drain area. The higher temps that we run our systems at, unlike Europe where these were derived from with low operating radiant temps, the block and seals are not holding up here.

Ask your guy if he uses the Triangle Tube Prestige boiler. You won’t go wrong with this self cleaning Stainless Steel Modulating and condensing boiler with outdoor rest.

Hi z1700, thanks for your responses here and also to the question on the old Timken.

I mentioned the Triangle Tube to one contractor -- he seemed to back away saying he had a good relationship with Weil Mclain and was nervous about getting parts and backup from TT. He mentioned Weil and one other company he generally sells as being old companies based in the US and easy to get support from, whereas the European companies, notwithstanding the good products they make, are harder to get consistent support and parts. I'm wondering whether this is smoke or a real concern. But I will keep looking into it.

I thank you heartily for warning me off both the Ultra and the GV. It seems like the two remaining options are -- convert the Timken for $2K or go with the Triangle Tube -- if I can find someone who is experienced putting it it -- for $10K ++++ --which is alright if it is as bulletproof as my old Timken.

If you have any thoughts about installing the TT -- either how to do it or who to have do it I would really appreciate it.

Read my other post

Please don’t convert, I will send you the money for a good boiler install and you send me back half the savings every year after it pays off for life. I’m kidding, but I'm serious about your savings, I have seen it every install.

FYI WM ultra is an overseas block and assembled here.

As a comparison, Chevrolet years ago was a big US co, but many of us bought Toyotas, because we want quality.

What city/state are you in?, I might know someone
