Wet filter in AC unit and what to do after fixing it?

This year my allergies have been crazy. I've always had them but have always just dealt with it or used OTC meds. During my normal monthy central AC filter chance I noticed there was moisture around the base of the unit and after opening the filter was also wet. I found the drain tube was clogged so I took care of that and got it draining like normal. After looking closely around the bottom area of the unit (blower motor, filter) the area that separated by the air filter had some gooey nasty crudd in it. So I took bleach water and sprayed the heck out of the entire bottom area inside and outside the unit and let sit for 10-15. Then I scraped the gooey crud from the interior and washed the exterior area by dumping water all around it. I did not open the middle part of the unit where the coil/drain pan reside FYI.

Not sure if what I did was 100% correct but I'm open to suggestions. I'd really like to eliminate my AC unit as a source of my allergy problems.
