We have a Sears Gold Star through the wall unit in our guest room. It's only been used 10 times and is 9 years old. When the compressor kicks on there is a giant "thunk" and then the vibrations literally drive our guests out of the room (found one sleeping on the sofa in an adjacent room!). The Sears guy came out and could not fix it. Said such noise was, effectively, the "nature of the beast."

What to do. Get a new one? What brand is truly quiet? Will all through-the-wall units fit into the same size sleeve?.

What about a window AC unit sliding into the sleeve? The window unit in my office is quiet as a mouse.

I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you.
