Using AL-PEX for radiator connections

My 1940 home has hot water radiators on the main and 2nd floor. The main feeder pipes from the gas boiler run along three basement walls about 6 inches lower than the floor joists, and there are risers running up to each radiator. We plan to finish off most of the basement and I would like to get these pipes up and out of the way.

I've seen one This Old House episode where they replaced cast iron radiator pipe in the basement with AL-PEX and they were able to drill the floor joists and thread the PEX up and across the joists like you would with electrical wire.

Does anyone have experience with using AL-PEX to replace cast iron hot water radiator pipe? Is it relatively easy to work with? Are there any long term disadvantages?

Thanks,

Bruce
