Repair or replace

We had a new a/c unit and furnace put in about 9 years ago. It turns out that the company who installed it did not replace the coils and the pan. The pan has now rusted, and is occasionally leaking water. We have been told that replacing it will cost approx $2,600 because it's hard to get to.

We also got a quote on a replacement system of $6,300. We would have to finance this.

My feeling is, based on the age of the units (parts of it are still under warranty) it's silly to replace them right now. The a/c and furnace are working just fine, it's just that the pan is leaking.

My husband is concerned that we are spending a lot of money on a repair when for a *cough* small amount more we could get a whole new unit.

Which of us is right?
