Replacing an R 22 condenser

I know this is a much talked about subject, however I would like input on my specific circumstances. I live on Long Island. I have a 16 year old York 3 1/2 ton R 22 system installed. The condenser is rotting most of the aluminum fins are disintegrating and I have holes in areas. I've been adding almost 4 pounds per year of the R 22. Rather than investing in repairing leaks, I am looking to replace the system. One contractor is offering a newer system complete with the blower and condenser. My original installer is trying to sell me a guardian R 22 condenser for obviously half the price of purchasing a new system. He is trying to sell me on the fact that R22 will be available for some time to come. I know this is not the case. I am just looking for some input from the community as to what the proper thing to do would be. I'm a bit confused
