cooling a house with radiators and a crawl space for an attic

I have a 120 year old house with a first, and 2nd floor, an unfinished basement, and a crawl space for an attic. The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms, bathroom and hallway. I want to install some sort of permanent air conditioning to cool, espically, the 2nd floor. After reading the reviews, it doesn't sound like a high velocity system is the thing due to maintenance, cost, and the fact that I don't have an attic.

I am thinking the mini split system with ceiling vents is the way to go. I want something unabtrusive. Is the mini split system the way to go? Can I connect it to my existing 2nd floor thermostat or do I need a separate one? What do other people think and what is the best brand to use. Should I purchase a unit off the internet or let an HVAC company provide one? Thanks so much for your thoughts.
