And do I understand that the gas meter is actually located 40 ft from your house? If so, I don't understand why. That may be a large part of the cost problem.

It's in the DFW area. The gas meter is located 40 ft from the house (moving this would cost approx. $4k because according to the gas delivery company that would require a completely new tap into the main gas line, which is another 100ft away)

I went with another quote that was half the price with black iron pipes instead of CSST. I don't get those wild quote swings in this business...
