open air handler closet

Hello,

My house was built about mid 1960's. The gas heater and A/C air handler are stacked and in an air handler closet, return air intake underneath. The closet door use to have an open vent in it. I have sealed that. The top of the closet is open to the attic. I really could do without the attic heat affecting the walls of that closet and door. Is there a way to get around having the top open? If it's for fresh air for the heater, couldn't that be done with something like a 4 inch vent pipe somehow? Is this something I need to check with city codes office?

I appreciate any responses.
