rheem heat pump system - message on thermostat - check heat pump

I have a rheem RHPLHM3621JC air handler(16 seer variable speed fan), a rheem RPRL036JEC Heat pump( 3 ton also variable speed fan) and a white rogers 1F99-1292 thermostat. The thermostat is saying check heat pump. If i remove thermostat and plug it back on to the base it will work again for a while. Then it will come back on and say check heat pump. Any ideas, thanks.

my local rheem distributor gem air. it's been in and working for about 4.5 years

Not enough info provided here.

Either a faulty thermostat that is providing a false positive error message or a problem with HP. I would shut system off and call your Installing dealer for a service call.
