Choosing which HVAC system...Carrier, Goodman

New construction in Chicago suburb, 4500-4800 sf...two systems. We know we want at least a two stage 92% eff furnace and 14 seer, 410A A/C. The bidders who carried Trane were way higher for comparable or less systems. Now--for about the same price--we are between Carrier 93% two stage furnace and A/C or Goodman 96% var speed furnace and A/C...either by same contractor who we have confidence will do a good job on the install. We even had as an option the Carrier Infinity system (people are raving) but would like to put the extra $8k we'd spend (gulp--that's his add) into a nice Wolf Range or something:) We could upgrade to the Carrier Infinity 96% furnace only (w/o system) for an add.

Many messages say it is about the install, parts are mostly manufactured by the same people, Goodman is great, Goodman is terrible, junky, Goodman is #1 in sales, Goodman has better warranty, Carrier is the best, Carrier you pay for the name, etc.

Are repairs similarly priced?
Is there difficulty getting warranty work done with either?
Does two stage have less issues than variable might?
Any reason other than cost savings over a long payback time to go to 96%?

We are building an extremely nice home but are very practical minded and research things to death so we just can't give up the idea of the value of the Goodman. Is Carrier just another golf shirt but with a fancy little horse on it?

Any insight would be appreciated so we can decide and move on with it.

you want var speed furnaces and I would even consider high eff HPs rather than AC condensers because of your reasonable electric rate.

and this is probably not what you want to hear but I would not build a new expensive home and then specify Goodman HVAC, Sorry, my bias and prejudice.

if this is a two story,I would put an 80% var speed furnace and a nice high eff HP upstairs.

Infinity hybrid are great systems. And Carrier Infinity has the best residential controller on the market.

If you don't believe in the cost savings with HPs, crunch the numbers on attached fuel comparison calculator. The cost difference on HPs will be offset by the nice payback.

You can use a heat pump during the changing of the seasons.
In Chicago, I would want a high efficiency furnace as it will be your primary heat source.

Goodman has very good performing heat pumps & high efficiency furnaces. - udarrell

Hi, it's really a personal question. Goodman units are good just a little noisy when run and carrier is like BMW u get the name and the performance but at a higher price. If you want something that looks good for the new house go with carrier but if you just want something that does its job with a little more sound then pick goodman. Now if you care about how others look at your house (bmw or honda park at your house question) then that's a different story. If you need more help or advice on carrier, trane, york, day & night, goodman units etc email me....hope this helps.......admin@gsistore.com

You can step up to Amana heat pumps and furnaces which is Goodman's better line. Amana 410A heat pump condensers have Copeland scroll compressors w/lifetime warranty to the original owner. They are also full btu and have solid EER and HSPF efficiencies.

The stainless steel heat exchangers on Amana gas furnaces also have a lifetime warranty.

A good installation is key to a great performing and long lasting system.

Take care.

We put in a Goodman AC/heatpump last December. I don't notice that it is noisy, we have a patio just 10 feet from it(around a corner) and I never notice any noise.

You just have to be careful who installs it. One thing with Goodman is that anyone can install it, even the homeowner while some other companies require authorized dealers install them. A bad install can be a major problem and since anyone can install a Goodman, I bet there could be more problems due to bad installs.

It's early yet but we have been very pleased with our Goodman unit.

You have to keep in mind that many of the components used among the many brands of HVAC units are identical and similar. A brand is just that. Tranes break, Carriers break, Goodmans break... they all break. Installation can make or break any installation. I still do think some brands make better products than others, however. Sometimes there are little things that put one brand ahead of the other--design, engineering, parts availability, efficiency, capacity, etc... I like Trane personally, but I'm not too impressed with their upper-end line of equipment for heat pumps and air conditioners. Carrier has a good, wide product line. You have to consider what you want. Goodman is a basic system. Other brands can provide more features. Of the 93% 2-stage Carrier and the 96% variable-speed Goodman, I'd choose the latter for the variable-speed blower. Put the comparable Carrier up against it, I'd choose the Carrier with the Infinity control and Performance outdoor unit.
