2 small gaps in return, improtant to seal?

I was changing my filter and having trouble getting it to slide in, the paper strips always get hung up. I think my cabinet opening is slightly bowed. Anyway, I peeked in and noticed that on the return duct side there are 2 little gaps right before the filter.

They are at the bottom corners where the large duct enters a sort of smaller section that is only about 1.5 inches wide. I think it is left from my old ductwork when I had the smaller width filter. This little section comes before the filter box. There is a little gap in each bottom corner (2) that I can put at least the tip of my index finger through. The furnace is in my unfinished basement.

Should I use that silver mastic tape to plug the holes or is not that big of a deal? Is the tape expensive? I am happy to call out the installer, but would rather not unless it is not a simple fix with tape.
