It would be a poor choice to replace a compressor on a 14+ yr old AC condenser.

What exactly was the service call for-just a routine checkup?

What size is condenser? How do you heat?

Without knowing more details, you might consider a second opinion from another dealer.

Brands I like are Trane/AmStd and Carrier/Bryant. At the minimum you would want to replace outside condenser with new and matching indoor evap coil.

Tiger, thank you for your advice. I didn't see it until now, so since we couldn't stay here a day without air we had to make a quick decision to have the unit replaced.

We had another company come this morning...ready for this? The old unit was made in 1989! It was this old round 4 ton Amana behemoth, teeth rattling loud and I'm sure inefficient to boot.

A Rheem coil was installed in 2003 (5 ton)
We just had the fellows install a 5 ton Rheem to "match" .

Pls not an r-22 condenser or one of the cheap made south of the border models.

Just because the coil is same brand does not necessarily mean it is a matching coil to new condenser.

If so, you made a very poor decision.
