3-5 cycles/hour suggests an oversized system.

Running continuous suggests an undersized system...

Of course there are possible other problematic reasons that could cause either condition...

You will never get good dehumidification with 3-5 cycles/hour. Under normal conditions at average summertime highs and a correctly sized system, 2-3 cycles/hour would be good. At extreme outside temps, it is possible to see system running continuous for hours. Not an ideal situation especially if system is not maintaining your inside comfort temperature.

When temps are moderate my system will cycle more than 4x an hour. when it gets above the mid 90's in the afternoon and evening it will run continuously for over an hour. the reason my cycles frequently in moderate weather is that the xstat tries to maintain very stable temp. it is an icomfort wifi. there is no adjustment for temperature hold range. it includes a hold time if power goes off or after it cycles compressor, to prevent turning compressor on again too soon (allowing high and low side pressures to equalize). It all works quite well to keep humidity in the high 40's. 3 ton unit. 1650 square feet single story.

how many minutes does it run & how many mins is it off?

if it cycles 5 times an hour & it is off an equal amount of time; the runtimes cycle (ON Half the time; 30-mins / 5 ) or only 6 minute runtimes, it takes nearly that long to get up to its cooling level & no time to dehumidify.

that is why in milder weather, most A/Cs are not sized small enough to dehumidify...

My two "half-ton" window units (one on first floor, one on 2nd floor) are small enough, & they also handle the highest Heat Index weather. A perfect combination.

that is why when you get 2-stage don't oversize the high 2nd stage!!!
