Why is radiant floor heat so #@%^# expensive!

I swore after building our last home that I wouldn't build another one without radiant in floor heat. We got a quote for around $40,000 for a system when we built our current home (5500 sq ft)

Well we're building another one, about 1/2 the size this time and as I mention to my builder (while discussing trying to stay on budget) that this is something I really want, he lets me know that he's only ever seen one person put a system in and it was "tens of thousands" of dollars.

ARGH!! Looks like I'm having to go back on my promise to myself. I just don't understand how it can be that expensive. After all it's mostly pex tubing - my plumbing job won't be 40K!

If you are in an area where not many contractors have a lot of radiant experience then it is likely that the remaining guys will ring it up. It is labor intensive and a good quality mod-con boiler is not inexpensive.
