AC or Heat Pump? How to get educated

In getting a proposal to correct a poor installation of AC, one dealer suggested a Carrier Inifinity Green speed heat pump instead of air handler/condenser. We have hydronic radiant heat (with Buderus LP boiler) and he is not convinced that it will be adequate in the winter so he proposed either a heating coil for the air handler or a heat pump as auxiliary heat sources. I have no experience or knowledge of heat pumps. I thought they were mostly used in warmer climates - we are 50 miles north of NY City. how can I evaluate the proposal? Is a heat pump a reasonable option? Will it be effective for humidification in the humid seasons? How can I learn a little more about these things? Thanks.
