So I had another company come out today who generally installs Trane/Carrier and when they looked up the model numbers from the 1st company's quote they said that the compressor/furnace combination won't get me 16 SEER because the furnace isn't a variable speed unit. Can you only obtain 15+ SEER with a variable speed furnace?

The 2nd company also said I really don't need to replace the furnace, it's still going strong and suggested just replacing the compressor/coils. They also said that because I'm keeping the old furnace there is no point in going above 13SEER for the compressor/coil combination because the furnace is inefficient. Got quoted for a Goodman GSX130301 + CAPF3636A for $3500. Thoughts on this combo?

My Goodman unit lasted 4 years, plus $2000 in repairs.

I had a 3rd estimate to replace just the compressor and coil:

Went with this option, seemed like a no-brainer when the price was less than the Goodman.
