I see demand defrost mentioned quite frequently here. I wonder if someone could explain the underlying principle behind demand defrost. I am just interested in HVAC technologies and would be interested to know how it works. I understand that it senses the frost buildup on the evaporator coil, but how is that done?

Or is the technology proprietary in some way?
