But why the Nest anyway? This company has a poor reputation in the marketplace for support both homeowners and installing HVAC dealers.

Have you contacted them? Has your dealer contacted them?

The premium preferred thermostat would be the HW VP IAQ Prestige model depending on what you hope to accomplish. I believe this stat has WiFI feature, controls two stage heating, has dehumidify on demand feature, and can control auxiliary equipment like humidifiers.

I will say this though. Too many dealers like to install what they know not what the homeowner wants, expects, or should have for best operation of a new system.

Hey thanks for the info. Despite the negative industry perception, I've gone with Nest because of where they're heading versus where they are today. These guys are the only ones putting this kind of investment into this space while maintaining the focus on the homeowner. Some limitations for sure, but their rate of software improvement has been impressive. As others have pointed out, Nest prioritizes behavior change over technical precision, but that's what I prefer. I've seen the effects with the gen 1 unit and never had any comfort issues.

All that said. You're right that at this moment in time, the Honeywell has better control.

I think the problem is the Nest technical people are former Apple software developers and not HVAC designers. They are great at writing software algorithms but don't understand the nuances of heating and cooling a house. On top of this they are trying to design a thermostat compatible with every heating and cooling system in existence.

If Nest hires some Honeywell thermostat engineers then they may have a very good third generation product. Until then you are better off buying a thermostat from companies who know how to design thermostats.
