Hello, my 21 year old Carrier 5 ton AC died yesterday. I had someone in the business take a look at it. He opened up the condenser unit and oil was sprayed everywhere. He said voltage was getting to the unit but the motor wasn�t working. He could change the compressor with a model he can get that uses the R22 Freon which, is expensive, but he said that 21 years is just about as the unit and coil was going to last and his suggestion was to replace both with a new Rheem 14.5 SEER unit that uses R410 for about $4200.00 (this didnt sound too high). His thought was that if the coil wasn�t replaced down the road that would be the next thing to go and I could have trouble with the availability of the older type Freon. Also, he said that the old lines can be cleaned out and used. It would be next to impossible because of the location of the unit to get new lines to it. I would appreciate thoughts from the experts here. My thought is to go with a new condenser and coil. Thanks!
