Help with Trane Quotes!

i have a very open 2,350 square foot two story in the atlanta area. we replaced the main downstairs unit two years ago with a 2.5 ton Trane XR13 system with an XR80 80,000 btu furnace.

we had the home rented at the time, but it is now our primary residence. we didn't realize that variable speed really helps with humidity and hot/cool spots, but really wish we had, as likely would have paid the extra for comfort.

fast forward to this year, and the upstairs unit has now died. we've received a few quotes for both a matching system to the downstairs and an option to upgrade to the XV80 furnace for both variable speed and two-stage cooling.

my question is-does it make sense to spend the money for the upstairs unit (our master and most of our life is lived on the main-level)? The "great room" is very open with 20+ foot ceilings and an open loft above where the upstairs system supplies will have an effect on the downstairs (if that makes sense...).

both companies have suggested adding a supply to the great room.

Current upstairs system is 2 ton, 60,000 btu gas furnace...18+ years old.

Company 1/Option 1-

-Trane 2-ton XR13, XR80 40,000 btu gas furnace
-4TTR3024, 4TXCA024, TUD1A040A924
-add supply to main great room
-$4,980

Company 1/Option 2-

-Trane 2-ton XR13, XV80 60,000 btu gas furnace
-4TTR3024, 4TXCA024, TUD2B060A9V3VB
-add supply to main great room
-new thermostat, TCON803
-$5,980

Company 2/Option 1-
-Trane 2-ton XR13, XR80 60,000 btu gas furnace
-4TTR3024, 4TXCA024, TUD1A060A936
-add supply to main great room
-$5,440

Company 2/Option 2-

-Trane 2-ton XR13, XV80 60,000 btu gas furnace
-4TTR3024, 4TXCA024, TUD2B060A9V3VB
-add supply to main great room
-keep existing thermostat
-$6,546

Really curious to hear if you guys think it's a wise investment for the variable speed on the second level. If possible, I suppose i could have a variable speed fan installed in our main XR80 furnace?? i'd hate to rip out the fairly new XR80 to put in a XV80. would likely been an expensive endeavour, but might be worth it, if it'll make the whole house more comfortable.

thanks!

While you live on the main level, you should have a working system for upstairs. What is the size of the living area.?

You should know that not only did you get the wrong model furnace for downstairs, I strongly suspect it is oversized as well.

I would not put an XR80 furnace upstairs. As a compromise to the XV80, get a price on the XT80 40 KBTU model with the XR13 condenser. Then make your decision. Because of sizing of the models, the XV80 while two stage heat would be oversized. You would stay in low stage all the time assuming the correct thermostat and never use the high stage.

Based on my last appraisal...it shows the main level living area is 1,763 square feet, while the upstairs is 846. I was slightly off on my total square footage assumption.

The first contractor did make the statement that the XV80's smallest available size is 80K btu and it would run in low stage a majority of the time, unless very cold. He mentioned that the biggest benefit would be the dehumidification capability and DC motor would significantly increase efficiency.

He said that a single-stage unit...only blowing at one speed...a 40K btu would suffice.

I will ask about the XT and let you know.

    thanks for the help!

Not true about the sizing. See below. 60 K size available in XV80.

crap, again, my bad...i meant 60K btu, not 80K btu. 80% efficiency.

    So the existing XR80 furnace is 60 K or 80 K size?

    Post back.

The main floor furnace is an XR80 80,000 btu furnace that was installed last year.

The upstairs furnace, that we are replacing, is a Comfortmaker II, 60,000 btu furnace.
