heat pump circuit board bypass for ac only

I have an older evcon guardian (? on the name, barely can make it out) a/c condensor unit. Made in wichita. I have been using it for a/c only last few years and relying in the inside units fan and electric coils for heat. When I tried to use it for a/c this year it seems to short cycle. Will turn on and run awhile and then shut off. The condensor, fan on inside unit stays on.

What is odd is that sometimes the condensor will run lilke it should, just not that consistent.

I was told to bypass the circuit board in the cond unit. I unhooked the yellow thermo wire from the circuit board and hooked it directly to one side of the contactor. I left the black wire hooked to the circuit board and the wire coming off it to the contactor alone.

Seemed to run fine all day yesterday and didn't short cycle. Is there any more damage i can do by doing this. Just trying to limp by until funds allow for a new system.
