Texas 5 Ton--Use R22 or newer refrigerant?

I live in Southeast Texas. Summers in the high 90s to low 100s. I have two 5 ton units, one a High Efficiency Scroll, and a backup 10-SEER about 19 years old, used once a month to maintain it. Older unit pulling high amps at start, tripping breaker. Since I only use it as a backup, I would like to just replace it with a new R-22 model and keep my A-coil, which is about 2 years old. An in-kind exchange. Contractor is pushing a 14 SEER RUUD scroll at $4,900, requiring new type freon and new A-coil. Is it feasible to just buy a new 5-ton outside unit using R-22, and maybe expect it to last 10-15 years with intermittent use? If so, any idea what a builder's type model should cost? I would gladly just replace the Compressor, if possible, but have no idea the cost of that option, since the dealer didn't think a compressor could be found. It is a Carrier unit. I assume Heat Pumps are a waste of time at this temp zone? Thanks for the info. Nice site!
