Six inches of insulation is about an R-19 value. This is about half of what you should have in an attic. Increasing the insulation will help reduce the heat load of the second floor.

The attic should have good ventilation. A roof ridge vent or turbines will help. You need a sufficient amount of air intake. Either gable end or soffit vents would be required.

Thanks Mike for the info. I will let my husband know about the insulation and that he has another honey do added to his list. Are the vents added by a roofing company or heating and air?

The vents in the roof should be handled by a qualified roofer.
