Question re furnace and HW heater

I am having some extensive hvac work done. Contractor installing a new Trane High efficiency furnace. Indicated he will use PVC and send thru roof - is this acceptable? Also don't want to spring for new hw heater and contractor said because the chimney will always be cold if I keep current hw heater the chimney will need to be lined. Does this make sense?

Lining the chimney for the hot water heater is a common practice. The installation manual for Carrier furnaces show venting is allowed through the roof. It is actually the preferred method. I don't know about the Trane products, but I assume it is also allowed.

I recommend using a concentric vent so only one roof penetration is needed. The height should be at least 12 inches above the highest anticipated snow height.

Contractor came back with a B Vent for current HW Heater for $400 - seems fair?

I assume there is a fair amount of labor involved in the installation. It seems reasonable.
