Electronic filters tend to cause more problems than they solve. None of the HVAC contractors I have spoken with have recommended them.

I am a little skeptical how a filter can operate on 24 volts AC can produce the electrostatic charge needed to attract air particles. Here is a quote from the EnviroSept web site:

"The input of 24-volts AC generates a 7,000 volt positive DC charge from its power head."

I would love to see the circuit that takes 24 volt AC and steps it up to 7000 volts DC in a device that is less than 1 inch thick! I notice the device has no UL rating. I would not feel safe installing this near a furnace.

I do not work for Dominion Power. I do, however, need a new HVAC system in my house and have limited space in which to fit an air cleaner. The product above certainly is attractive from a cost and space standpoint, but a search of the forum did not turn up any hits. So I thought that I would ask about it.

So Mike_home appears to be a vote AGAINST this unit - and pretty much any other electronic filter. So you would recommend the larger box with thick media filters?

My suggestion is to get a 4 inch media filter. The bigger filters last longer and have lower air resistance.

I have had 4 EnviroSept filters. They appear to work well. Since they use very little current it is easy to generate 7000 V from a 20+ volt ac signal and a diode voltage multiplier circuit. Each stage results in a voltage doubling so 20 40, 80, 160, 320, 640, 1280, 2560, 5120, 10240V. Since there is loss at each stage and the voltage gradually increases with time, it is easy to used this circuit to produce a low current 7000 volt supply. I know it works because I openned it up and repaired it one time after 5 - 6 years.
