Something wwird with our ac

Upfront, I don't know a thing about the ac unit, that part of my brain doesn't work.

It's a small house. Central heat/air. Unit has to be older. It was older looking when we moved in 8 years ago. But, it's always worked fine. No maintenance other than a quarterly filter.

The other night it started intermittently doing something weird.

Best to give an example.
Say the temp in house is 78. Therm is set at 75. It will run, blow out could air. When it reaches 75 it stops blowing.
Yet, the air handler is still making noise and the outside unit/fan is still going. And it will just keep going indefinitely.

I can't afford a new unit, no way. So please someone boost my mood and tell me a repairman can put a bandaid on it.

It would be nice to have some facts and data with this nice anecdotal story.

Start with brand, model, size, age of system both outside condenser and inside air handler or furnace. Specify if you heat with nat gas, HP, or straight strip heat.

Last time system was serviced.

Brand, model, age of thermostat.

Your location.

Perhaps an overload trip at blower motor, perhaps a bad thermostat.

Has system resumed operating normally.

You ave checked breaker service for a trip?

Just guessing.

Bad thermostat or stuck relay somewhere.

The thermostat should have a heat/off/cool selector on it somewhere.

Move it to off and see if everything stops.

How much noise is the air handler making if it is not blowing air?

Do you have a condensate pump running?
