Replacing slab ducts in attic

The metal ducts in our 30 year old house have rusted and now the gophers have filled them part way with soil so we need to re-route the ducts into the attic. One contractor said we could keep our furnace and mount it on a platform about 3 feet off the floor and attach a duct to the bottom, where the plenum is, to blow the air into attic ducts. Would this work?
Another contractor said he would have to install a furnace horizontally with our lack of height in the attic so we would have to buy a new furnace which increases the price substantially.
This is all to save money which is very scarce and still have heating and air conditioning.
