Trying for fit air handler in closet - can supplys be down?

I am trying to keep duct work in conditioned space in a 2 story house. The house (in design stage) will have open web trusses between floors so the ductwork can run there. But I am used to supply's leaving out the top of an air handler if it is vertical. That is possible, it just requires a decent amount of room in the closet.

The house is 2000 sq feet and I am guessing (for now) that there will be a 2 ton unit on each floor. The 1st floor has a closet for the air handler. The usual practice is to put the upstairs air handler in the attic. I am anticipating a return on the unit itself with a louvered door. I will call the HVAC contractor today but they are just so used to putting the air handler in the attic. There is not a great deal of room on the 1st floor to put the air handler for the 2nd floor there and then you need to have a space for the return. It can be done but involves some compromises.

I guess the follow up question is how big does the closet need to be? Because of small rooms upstairs, there are probably going to be 7 registers (4bed, 3bath). I know the usual practice here is 1 register in a small/med room.

seeing house plans is the only way to determine if ducts
can be located in a conditioned space.
you could fur down a common area to supply to all rooms
if layout allows and put ahu in closet on second floor..
if layour allows.

make it clear to hvac company that this is what you want
and work with them.

usually closets are approx 3' by 3'.
I like solid doors that seal well to platform
and retruns that are air sealed with fbg in door.
filter either at door or under ahu.

are you sure you need 4 tons on 2000 sq ft?
maybe a single unit with zoned dampers would serve you
better than multiple units. sounds like 500 sq ft rule of
thumb sizing.

you need a load calc and a duct design to determine size
and properly lay out and size ducts.

best of luck.

I was just guessing on the 4 tons - a man J would be done. The problem is that I can't get a man J until the plans are done and I'd like to incorporate enough closet space on the plans.

I'm definitely considering a zoned system. I don't want to do 2 stages and it is a very humid environment so I am a little concerned when only one zone is calling, that it will be oversized.

I don't have the time to get a duct diagram prior to finishing the plans.
